(THUNDER BAY, ON) – Last week Ashlee, Eric and Jess were alerted by social media about drug paraphernalia at the Kam River Park.
“This morning myself, Eric John Klages and Jess Cook met up at Kam River park on Simpson St and picked up and safely disposed of random needles and other drug paraphernalia. We started out at the kam river park and made our way up to the shelter house. Another clean-up success for TRCCTB cleanup crew! ??♲”
We decided to do a sweep of the area and also made our way up Simpson St to the shelter house. We successfully got needles, crackpipes and a knife off the street and out of the Park.
“There is a needle disposal bin attached to a pole at the waterfront and it doesn’t seem to be used. Most needles we found were within 30 feet of the bin. It was just as disturbing to us to find a needle in a flower box at the Shelter House. This is an epidemic we are facing, a crisis in this city that needs to be addressed. We know a safe injection site is on the way and are hopeful it’s helpful however a proper needle exchange is going to be a necessity. We plan to do a monthly sweep of the area and others that we are alerted to in the city. We hope for a consistent show of volunteers to make this possible and do even more to make change”. – Ashlee, Clean Up Crew Organizer
