(THUNDER BAY, ON) – Earlier today, we broke the story about the “industrial accident” that took place at Resolute on Darrel Avenue.

What we have learned is that a man in his mid-30’s was performing maintenance on a wood-chipper (pictured in a generic photo, not of actual unit).

During the course of the maintenance, the top half of the unit was opened and was supposed to be properly locked out. The machine was supposed to have safety precautions taken so that it did not slam shut.

While the 30-something male Millwright was working on the unit, the top half slammed shut with such force, that his arm sustained serious injuries. It is believed his forearm was crushed from the impact.

Resolute has since shut down the area and the Ministry of Labour responded to the scene to being their investigation. They are said to be continuing into tomorrow. The night shift was cancelled this evening due to the incident.

Safety is no accident, always ensure you work to the highest safety standards possible. The community is collectively hoping that this man recovers and is able to return to work when healed up.

  1. Sounds like someone failed to lock out the safety mechanism. There will heads rolling for this including on duty supervisor who should have inspected the site prior to work being done.
