(THUNDER BAY, ON) – At least one Secord Street resident is upset a little, as the demolition of a church on their street gets underway today after city council gave the destruction the go-ahead earlier in the month.

The church at the corner of Cornwall and Secord is scheduled to begin demolition today. The barricades are up around the building, and the contractor is on site beginning the process.

This structure was being considered as a possible heritage building but after an analysis by the Heritage Advisory Committee, it was marked as too much work to repair.

An official working on the project told TRCCTB.COM that the plan is to use a crane to lift the top o the steeple up and off the building, once that is done, it is just a matter of having an excavator knock the building down into it’s own footprint, beginning at one end and working their way to the other. At that point, dump trucks will begin hauling loads of the debris off the property.

Area resident James tells TRCCTB.COM in an interview that he would have rather seen the church saved, as it was a piece of history that reflected the area. “There is no churches like this around town anymore, they just don’t build them like they used to anymore, I really do wish they would have saved it instead of those statues on Algoma, don’t get me started on those dear god”

A brand new office building is planned to take the vacant lot after the site is cleaned up. It will be interesting to see how they match the new building with the historic feel of that portion of Secord Street.
