City council on Monday will be discussing raising the mayor’s salary to $93,300, and also having each councillors salary raised to $30,672 from January 1st, 2019 and onward.

The raise should help to absorb the loss from the one-third tax-free exemption along with an increase to match half of inflation over the past decade.

These salaries had last been reviewed in 2008 and in March of 2017, council decided to have a citizen committee examine council remuneration and come up with suggestions.

Our mayor’s current base salary sits at $80,000, and would get bumped up on December 1st to $85,600. Councillors currently haul in $27,000 and would see a bump on December 1st to $28,890. These raises would come into effect as they are sworn in on their first day of the new term.

The raise on January 1st, which will help offset the federal government cancelling the one-third tax free exemption, will see the mayor’s salary climb to $93,300 and councillors to $30,672.

These raises are recommendations brought forth by the citizen committee who analyzed the respective salaries. The committee also recommended that the mayor and council have their salaries adjusted yearly to match half of inflation beginning in January 2020.
