A south side resident woke up to discover their vehicle, which was parked in the backyard driveway of a home in the 300 block of Catherine Street, was laying in ruins from a fire, and no, this wasn’t an April Fools joke.
Dennis Mihkelson said in an interview with TRCCTB.COM that he had gone to bed at roughly 11:30 am last night, and was woken up by a pounding on his front door at about 4-4: 30 am, but when he went to go see who was there, nobody could be found. Later on in the morning, around 8:30 am when Mihkelson went outside of his residence, he discovered his 2008 Chevrolet Equinox had been involved in a serious vehicle fire.
Upon speaking with the other tenants in the building later on in the morning, he discovered that the knocking was more than likely the fire department looking for the owner of the vehicle. A neighbour also informed Mihkelson that the 911 call went out around 3:40 am when that neighbour noticed the flames.
A tenant in the building had made contact with the fire department at around 4:15 am and informed them that the vehicle that was incinerated was the property of Dennis Mihkelson.
The vehicle was in one of those tarp-tent like shelters from Canadian Tire, Mihkelson explains, and that the fire could have gone undetected until it grew to a significant size.
Mihkelson’s family had slept through the ordeal, only discovering what had happened once they woke up and spoke with other tenants in the building.
Mihkelson told us that his vehicle has fallen victim to thieves stealing change and other items several times over the years when he forgot to lock his doors, but he says it was locked it last night.
Mihkelson says he called the fire department, and that the investigation is ongoing.
“The fire department hasn’t ruled anything yet” Mihkelson explains. “I’m calling them tomorrow, but the Platoon Chief said they may not be available because of the holiday”
