(THUNDER BAY, ON) – The police watchdog that has been investigating the Thunder Bay Police Service and how it deals with Indigenous peoples will be released today. The probe into city police began in November 2016 by the Office of the Independent Police Review Director.
Director Gerry McNeilly said that Indigenous leaders sounded the alarm surrounding the way city police investigate the disappearances and deaths of Indigenous people. He says that those leaders claimed officers devalued Indigenous lives, exhibited behaviour based on racist attitudes, and reflected differential treatment.
The investigation into the TBPS is focused on existing practises, policies and attitudes of officers as they relate to Indigenous deaths and missing persons. The probe is also looking into whether those policies are being followed.
