UPDATED: James Street Swing Bridge Reopening Saturday at 10:00 am

EARLIER: After 6 years of being closed the James Street Swing Bridge is finally scheduled to open to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic on Saturday at 10:00 am.


Fort William First Nation residents are excited along with numerous residents of Thunder Bay, as the detour down Highway 61 can and often does become dangerous.

The width of the vehicular lane remains unchanged but the sidewalk has been widened due to the new barrier introduced to improve safety.

The bridge’s speed limit remains unchanged at 20km/h along with a weight restriction of 15,000 kilograms.


Businesses on both sides of the bridge are expected to experience an increase in business as people every rejoice.

    I bet the fire was started by their own equipment. Probably a sticky brake dropping molten metal onto the bridge timbers. It’s not at all uncommon.
