Hammarskjold High School Police Presence – St Pius Hold and Secure

(THUNDER BAY, ON) – A change of pace today as students at Hammarskjold High School will continue the school day for the first time in well over a week.

Lakehead Public Schools announced earlier this morning that Hammarskjold will have a police presence throughout the day and that access in and out of the school will be limited to two entrances. It is not clear at this moment from the statement if this is due to another threat or if it is a safety precaution. Classes will continue for the full day today.

The Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board also announced that St Pius is now in a “Hold and Secure”, but did not give any reason for this.

Last night many students and parents participated in a meeting in which emotions were clearly elevated as the threats were being discussed. Numerous students are exhausted and do not want to be dealing with this situation any longer.

Some people were slamming the school board for what they claimed is the school board not doing enough and keeping parents in the dark about the details of what is happening.

A parent of a student at Hammarskjold has told TRCCTB that they believe another anonymous threat was levied against the school this morning and that the police are at the school protecting the children so that they can learn.

Last night students and parents praised both the Thunder Bay Police Service as well as the teachers and staff at Hammarskjold for keeping the students safe during the threats.

We will update this further as more information becomes available.

  1. It took them this long to figure out a workable solution. They should have been doing this with hired security after the first few times.
