UPDATED: Gas Leak Prompts Westgate to be Evacuated

(THUNDER BAY, ON) – A potential gas leak at Westgate Collegiate and Vocational Institute has caused the school to be evacuated.

A school official estimated that around 20 or more school buses are headed to the school to help keep kids out of the cold while the matter was dealt with. They say the announcement was made shortly before 9:30 am to evacuate.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue are on scene of the gas leak along with Union Gas to begin sorting out the situation.

The school board sent out this text, alerting parents to the issue “Please be advised that a potential gas leak at Westgate has necessitated the evacuation of the school. Fire Department and Union Gas are on site. Buses are on the way for students so that they are not exposed to the cold as they wait for the school to be cleared. Further updates will be sent as they become available,”

Numerous parents came down to the school to pick up their kids after the text went out. Many students went to Robins Donuts and other stores near by.

It is currently -21C at Westgate with the windchill. There is no estimated time of when or if the school will be reopened.

Update: Kids are being allowed back in the school but only in the Cafeteria and Gym.

UPDATE: Union Gas and Thunder Bay Fire Rescue have given the school the “all-clear” for students to return back to class.

UPDATE: Word at the school is that a dilution tank had an issue which lead to the smell that called for the evacuation.
