(THUNDER BAY, ON) – On Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at approximately 6:55 am, officers from the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway 11/17.
A southbound automobile collided with a northbound automobile on the Thunder Bay Expressway, between Oliver Road and the Harbour Expressway.
The driver of the southbound automobile was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the northbound automobile was transported to the hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries.
OPP, OPP Highway Safety Division officers (HSD), OPP Traffic Collision Investigators (TCI), Forensic Identification Services officers (FIS), Thunder Bay Police Service, Super ior North Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Thunder Bay Fire, and the Coroner’s Office attended the scene to assist with the investigation.
The Thunder Bay Expressway was closed while the investigation proceeded and was re-opened at approximately 12:45 pm. The investigation is continuing.

Thunder Bay Firefighters are currently sorting out a vehicle blaze that occurred on the road this morning.
The fire raged around 7:00 am this morning, with the vehicle being completely destroyed. A 3 vehicle collision on the Thunder Bay Expressway involving multiple vehicles between Oliver and the Harbour has resulted in this fire.
A woman said that her husband was at the scene, attempting to rescue a man from the burning vehicle, but failed.
OPP Have said at least one person died this morning on the expressway.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to the scene shortly after 7:00 am on the Expressway.
Ontario Provincial Police are on scene investigating along with the Thunder Bay Police Service.
Concrete barriers separating opposing lanes of traffic would have mitigated this incident.
If you pass the incident, please slow down and drive safely. Emergency crews are working hard to sort out the situation.
Police are also on the scene, directing traffic as the highway is temporarily closed.
A number of other vehicles were seen in the ditch along the expressway in unrelated incidents, please be careful as it seems roads are slippery.

We have received information from multiple people telling us that 20-year-old Dallas Bailey was the victim of this tragic collision. Our thoughts are with his friends and family at this time.
