(FORT FRANCES, ON) – UPDATE: Highway 502 has now been reopened.
EARLIER: Shortly before 3:00 pm local time, which would be just before 4:00 pm Thunder Bay time, a serious highway collision involving a Volkswagen Jetta sporting American license plates and a Kia Sorento sporting Ontario license plates.
The head-on collision took place on Highway 502 just north of Highway 11 near the town of Fort Frances. Police, firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene. Firefighters were needed to extract injured people.
Initially, the northbound lanes of Highway 502 was closed down due to the investigation. Traffic control was in place and motorists were being alternated in the southbound lane. Highway 502 is now closed to traffic entirely as police investigate.
Sources indicate that multiple people have been transported to the hospital in Fort Frances with varying degrees of injuries. A land ambulance and a helicopter ambulance were both on location hauling out the injured. A woman in the Kia Sorento (Ontario plates) is dead.
It is advised to avoid travelling through the area until later tomorrow. If you must traverse the scene, please remember to slow down and move over for first responders, it’s the law.
