(SHUNIAH, ON) – An early morning fire broke out in the Township of Shuniah, sparking a response from the brave first responders that work in the area.
Firefighters with the Shuniah Fire and Emergency Services along with an officer from the Ontario Provincial Police responded to the scene today.
A camp in the 1240 block of Grandview Beach Drive appeared to be fully engulfed upon our arrival. Heavy, billowing smoke could be seen from Lakeshore Drive as it was lit up by the flames.
Hydropower appeared to be impacted in the area as it was complete darkness, caused by the nearby streetlights not being illuminated. We assume the severity of the fire sparked hydro to be shut down in the area. I managed to sneak in to get a better view, as the fire chief shooed me away. The structure appears to be a complete loss. My phone had died in my hands as I was about to snap the photo.
The presence of the Ontario Provincial Police is interesting and makes one wonder if the cause of the fire, which spawned in -27C weather, may have been caused by an act of arson. Traffic control was not in place when we arrived, nor when we left.
At the time of this publication, crews are still on location. Nobody was likely at the residence during the blaze as we did not see anyone but first responders present.
