Big Trout Lake House Fire Claims Five Lives


(BIG TROUT LAKE, ON) – Very sad news coming out of a northern community located 600km north of Thunder Bay today.

5 people have died after a house was engulfed in flames on the First Nation land of Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug.


The identities of the deceased nor the cause of the fire have been released yet but we do know it was 4 children and 1 parent. The cause of the fire has not been confirmed as far as we know thus far.

Chief Donny Morris said in a media release “We are in utter disbelief as every community member is connected and impacted. Today our community mourns this tragic loss.”.

The investigation is continuing and we will update you as more facts become available.

  1. Truly a sad day for this community. Hopefully no children were involved.

    Unfortunately, there are often fires on reserves that take multiple lives. Fire safety isn’t high on the list of necessities for far too many reserves it seems. It’s a situation that isn’t likely to change any time soon.
