(THUNDER BAY, ON) – An early morning collision had all three arms of our first responders working hard to sort out the situation.
At approximately 2:30 am a grey Hyundai Santa Fe is said to have blown through the stop sign at the intersection of Rockwood and Robinson, ultimately colliding with a tree.
A 911 call was made by a nearby citizen who says they were startled by the crash and came to check out the commotion. Police, firefighters and paramedics worked together trying to save the life of the driver, who was the only person in the vehicle.. A paramedic was seen giving chest compressions while firefighters helped load the gurney into the ambulance.
Police have blocked off the road while their traffic investigators are working through the cold winter night to determine what had happened. Alcohol or drugs are not known to be factors at this point. Further details are expected to emerge later.
The driver was transported by ambulance to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. Sources close to the incident say that the 55-year-old male driver has succumbed to their injuries and was declared deceased at the hospital.
It is recommended to avoid the intersection of Robinson and Rockwood as well as surrounding areas while police complete their investigation.
