(PIKANGIKUM, ON) – On November 22nd, 2019, hardworking officers with the Pikangikum detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call for service regarding a woman being assaulted.
Officers conducted an investigation and as a result have arrested 39-year-old Derrick Leon Strang. He was held in police custody pending a court appearance.
This morning, via telephone call, Strang appeared in a Thunder Bay courtroom in front of Justice of the Peace Anna Gibbons, Crown Attorney Tamara Fairchild and duty counsel lawyer Robert Atatise. He is facing a single charge of assault.
Strang is no stranger to the criminal justice system, he has a related criminal record with a conviction as recent as 2017.
Court denies Strang today, after some back and forth discussions take place.
He is scheduled to appear back in court on Monday in Kenora for another swing at being released from jail. He will be flown out of the community of Pikangikum and sleep at the Kenora District Jail this evening. He will likely remain at the Kenora District Jail until his inevitable release.
