(THUNDER BAY, ON) – Thunder Bay Police Service officers with the Uniform Patrol Branch were dispatched to the 200 block of Cumming Street following reports of an assault at a residence just after 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21.
When officers arrived citizens directed them to a 35-year-old male who appeared to be the victim of a serious assault.
Officers also located an accused male at the scene, whom they arrested without incident.
The victim was transported to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre where he is receiving further treatment for serious injuries.
Both victim and accused were known to each other.
Members of the Thunder Bay Police Service’s Major Crimes Unit are now investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.
Officers with the Thunder Bay Police Service responded to the scene and made a quick arrest. 25-year-old Tyler Sapay was arrested, charged and held in police custody at the TBPS Balmoral Street station pending his court appearance which happened this morning.
Sapay was previously on the Wanted Wednesday roster in 2018.
He appeared in a Thunder Bay Courthouse courtroom this morning via video link from the TBPS Balmoral Street station. Senior Regional Justice of the Peace Bernard Caron was presiding along with hardened Crown Attorney P. Pasloski and a duty counsel worker. Sapay is facing the following charges:
- Aggravated assault endangering life.
- Breaching a probation order made on March 7th, 2019 (keep the peace and be of good behaviour).
Court didn’t grant Sapay release from custody today. He is going to remain in jail for the time being. December 24th, 2019 is when he is scheduled to appear in court next.
