(THUNDER BAY, ON) – Convicted sex offender, 72-year-old Michael Danial Bewcyk is no longer in jail and has been out in the public. He has court-ordered restrictions placed on his life which limits his ability to be around children. Sources indicate that he was frequenting the Midtown Inn and may have been living there. Those same sources say he is likely still residing at the northside, Cumberland Street motel.
Earlier this week, he was on a city bus and the mother of a child he previously put on his e-bike and attempted to drive off with found herself right in front of him. She snapped his photo and reported it to us. This was a traumatic experience for her and she questions why she was not notified about his release from jail.
On Friday, January 31st, 2020, Bewcyk was spotted at City Hall, located in the southside downtown area. He appeared to be waiting for a city bus and was seen lurking around the windows, peeking through them in a manner consistent with a sexually perverted person. (Always take photos and send them in to us. We will not reveal your identity.)
Bewcyk has been charged and convicted with numerous sexual offences involving children. Years and years ago he was the janitor at a local elementary school and numerous children who attended at that time have now grown up and spoke out about the twisted experiences they say they had with him.
Bewcyk went to a local church function and was volunteering. It was a “back to school” event that took place over a year ago. He was photographed operating the barbeque at this event, which was filled to the brim with children. He was already a convicted sex offender and had restrictions on being around children and was not to be volunteering like he was.
Here is our reported regarding that incident in an article we published dated August 27th, 2018. It took mainstream media a number of days to pick up the story after we initially broke it.
(THUNDER BAY, ON) – Information has come across our newsdesk about a child being abducted by a registered sex offender in Thunder Bay yesterday(Sunday)
Our source tells us that she went to church on Sunday with her daughter. Once they arrived, she noticed an odd man that nobody had ever met before.
She introduced herself and asked the usual questions, such as “how are you” etc. Shortly after, the mother made her way downstairs to mingle with the adults, not thinking anything was off.
The mother ended up leaving a bit early, and left her daughter there with a friend to finish the ceremony, as the mother had some things to do. Our source indicates that they live within walking distance of the church.
Her daughter and her friend wanted to go to the mall, so she dropped them off there and told her daughter to call her once she was ready to be picked up. That call never came.
An hour went by, and still no phone call. An hour turned into an hour and a half, which almost got to two hours before the phone finally did ring.
The phone rings, it’s not her daughter on the line, it’s a police officer. The TBPS officer advises her to meet him at Popeye’s across from SilverCity ASAP. The mother arrived there to see 4 cop cars and the new man from church sitting on his blue ebike.
The mother asked the officer what had happened, and where is her daughter. The officer pulled her aside and said they had found it very odd that this man was on a ebike with a child that was not wearing a helmet.
The mother repeated and asked “What happened?”
It turns out he’s a registered sex offender. He has a criminal record surrounding sexual offences.
The sex offender had followed the girls from the mothers house, to the mall. He bought them a pop and asked if they wanted a ride home. Her daughter got on the back of his ebike.
The police clued in that something was off with this older man having a very young girl on the back of his ebike, with no helmet.
Appearing in courtroom 104 this morning of the Thunder Bay Courthouse by video from the Thunder Bay Police Station is 70-year-old Micheal Danial Bewyck.
Her Worship, Justice of the Peace Jennifer Neill is presiding, along with Provincial Crown Attorney Derek Silvestro, and Andrew Desmoulin as Duty Council Lawyer.
Bewcyk was arrested on Sunday for violating a prohibition order.
Bewcyk is not allowed to attend anywhere that kids under 16 will or are likely to be, such as, but not limited to, parks, pools, etc.
Crown Attorney Silvestro initially suggested that Bewcyk be released on a no-surety recognizance.
The Crown is reading into the court record, his proposed conditions. A woman is in shock that this man is about to be freed, and is crying in the courtroom. Silvestro pauses and notes the disruption in the courtroom. The woman leaves the courtroom in distress.
The Crown reads in the allegations. In 2010 Bewyck was convicted of an offence and was ordered to avoid any areas where children under 16 are present or may be present.
Sunday, August 26th, 2018, 16:36hr police were on patrol in the area of May Street and Isabel Street. Police observed a male on an ebike, who was later identified as Michael Bewcyk.
Police witnessed the male with two young females. The male grabbed one of the young girls to give her a ride on his ebike and headed south on May Street.
The young girl had no helmet on, so police conducted a traffic stop.
Bewcyk and the girl are unknown to each other.
Further investigation revealed that on August 25th, 2018, Bewcyk was at a church event that was themed as “back to school”, and Bewcyk was there volunteering flipping burgers. It was at this time that Bewcyk is being charged with violating his prohibition order. (This articles main photo)
- 2010: Fraud over 5000
- 2010: Adult accessing child pornography
- 2015: Breach of prohibition order in relation to children (same as today)
Her Worship Neill opposes his release “I’m surprised there is no surety with this release, to be quite frank”, and demanded that this man have some level of supervision, should he be released.
“I am not content with this release” Her Worship Neill says.
The matter is stood down until later today.
Upon return of the matter into court, new information has come to the Crown Attorney that the Thunder Bay Police are still investigating and that more charges may be coming.
The Crown opposes Bewcyk’s release after reviewing this new information, and Bewcyk is remanded into custody for a court appearance scheduled tomorrow.
We will follow up tomorrow.
Sources have indicated that Bewcyk used to be a janitor at McKellar Park Central School but was suspended when he was charged with accessing child pornography.
Furthermore, sources have indicated that Bewcyk lives in the 300 block of Franklin Street North.
Below is a woman’s report on what she has dealt with regarding Bewcyk.
Alright so, my friends and I wanted to share our experiences regarding Michael Bewcyk after the child abduction article came out, in hopes that if our stories went public it might encourage others to speak up if they have something to share, because we believe wholeheartedly that this isn’t the first time he’s done something like this, but rather the first time he’s been caught (aside from his child pornography charges).
He was the janitor at our elementary school, McKellar Park, for the duration of our education there (1997-2007).
Originally we thought of him as a nice friendly older gentleman. Always smiling, waving, talking to the kids etc. The older we got, however, we realized that there were some strange things about him. For one, he used to hand out candy. Harmless, of course, until you go from handing it out in the hallways to saying “come downstairs to my office and get the candy there”.
Starting in grade 6, he would invite my friends and I (all female) to go and hang out with him in his office, which is where the boilers were and crawlspace to the school. Whether we hid down there during recess if we didn’t want to go outside or something else, as long as we promised not to tell and nobody saw us go down there with him, he’d let us.
There were multiple times that he would actually let us go into the crawlspace of the school and crawl around with him, on our hands and knees, and nobody would have had any idea we were down there.
I remember one time some of the girls made it back to the entrance to the crawlspace and said “last one out gets locked in with Dan!” (He is known by Dan, which is his middle name).
I digress, I ended up being the last one to the door and remember banging on the door to the girls to let me out, and remember just having an incredibly chilling feeling having this man next to me. In addition, we found out this evening as well via the comments section of the Thunder Bay Courthouse – Inside Edition that he had done this to another group of girls years before us, and that just makes it even more disturbing.
“Who knows how many innocent children he has lured into unknown places.”
Another instance, in grade 6, I began taking my camera to school and taking pictures. I remember that Halloween my one friend and I were walking around and we gave Dan a picture of the two of us for his locker.
At this time, we were still too young and innocent to understand this was inappropriate and were thinking instead he was just a nice old man who loved his job and working with kids.
Two years later, we were back down in the boiler room hiding, and I remember seeing our photo in his locker, after all that time. I immediately ripped it down and tore it up, although the other girl in the photo said “hey, that’s mean, that’s his photo!”. I guess in those 2 years I had matured just enough and more than her to realize that it was not okay for him to have that photo.
Another recollection I have, (and I believe this was in grade 8,) involving the same girl, was that one day we were walking down the 300 block of Franklin Street North and saw Dan (Michael) on his steps.
He waved at us, so we stopped and said hello. He then proceeded to invite us inside for a drink.
We were now at the age where everything was comical to us; we were young and careless, so we agreed and stepped inside.
He then did something which we both recognized as wrong: offered us a beer, at the ages of 12 and 13. We declined, stating we were too young to drink. He then proceeded to offer us a non-alcoholic beverage and disappeared into the kitchen.
My friend and I then looked at each other and shared likewise opinions about the situation being wrong, and we ran out the door without even saying goodbye. I am confident that if we stayed that day something horrible would have happened.
Along with that, we would always see Dan biking around, waving and talking to kids. We never saw him with people his own age, or talk to other adults. He always went swimming at Dease Pool, which we thought was strange, as he went alone and would just swim in the pool and chat with children.
Our parents used to tell us to be nice to him, and when we started having suspicions that there was something wrong with him, they didn’t believe us and would say “he’s just a nice old man.” It was a year or two after grade 8 when the news broke about him being charged with possession of child pornography.
Needless to say, we got to have the “we were right” boast and our parents all felt terrible. Around that same time, we were actually having a reunion at McKellar for the schools anniversary, and that’s all anyone on the staff was talking about, amongst the parents. They were all incredibly shocked. Not us, however.
In light of this new development with him almost succeeding in luring an innocent child to his home, we thought it would be best to speak up in hopes of perhaps encouraging others to share their stories, as they may not have been as fortunate as us.
I also know according to his probation rules, which were released in the article earlier, that he’s not to be within a certain amount of feet of any areas that have the possibility of hosting children under 16, but as a long-time employee of ISC, I can testify I have seen him every day for almost 3 years, walking in laps around the mall.
Never shopping, just watching. And I know nothing can be done about that by Security because it’s up to probation officers to give that sort of jurisdiction.
As a matter of fact, I saw him walking around the mall on Sunday, which coincides with what the article said. I work across from (censored) and he’s always extra slow passing that store.
Sincerely, Chloe Skylar
