OPP Arrest Man Who Escaped Custody High on Solvents

(PIKANGIKUM, ON) – On June 25th, 2019 officers with the Pikangikum detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police spotted a male outside of his residence while intoxicated while he was on conditions to not leave his home while intoxicated. Police made the arrest but also gave the man the chance to return some property to his home before coming down to the police detachment.
It is at this point that the male had managed to thwart the officers who had him detained. He fled the scene while believed to have been high on an uncertain solvent and has been on the run since. Further, it is alleged that the same male committed mischief on August 28th in an unrelated incident.
Appearing in a Thunder Bay court room this morning via telephone call from the Pikangikum First Nation OPP detachment is 29-year-old Martinson Quill. Justice of the Peace Zelda Kitchekeesic, Crown Attorney Afton Brown and a duty counsel representative were present for the matter.
Quill is facing the following criminal charges:

  • Escape lawful custody.
  • Breaching bail conditions (not be outside home intoxicated).
  • Breaching bail conditions (attend court as required).
  • Mischief.

After much discussions in court surrounding why Quill should not be released, he was ordered to remain in jail until at least Monday. He is scheduled in a Kenora court room at that time and will have another shot at being released.
Quill will be flown on an airplane to the Kenora District Jail today, which will ensure he makes his court date.
