(THUNDER BAY, ON) – An international student that is currently in Thunder Bay and attending Lakehead University has been arrested and charged by the Thunder Bay Police Service.
Allegations are that 21-year-old Sahil Patel assaulted a woman to the point it caused bodily harm. It’s not clear at this point, but it is further alleged that at some point during the incident, Patel damaged the woman’s cell phone, impacting her ability to reach out for help.
Patel appeared in a Thunder Bay Courthouse courtroom on Tuesday, January 28th, 2020 in front of Justice of the Peace Ray Zuiliani. Crown Attorney Heather Brachen was also present along with criminal defence lawyer Patricia Vo, acting as duty counsel. Mr. Budd, a law-student that was here on behalf of criminal defence lawyer David Pierce was also present. Patel is facing the following criminal charges:
- Assault causing bodily harm.
- Mischief causing damage under $5000.
Patel is not granted bail today and has to spend the night in jail. He is ordered not to contact two people while he is behind bars. Budd schedules a bail hearing for Patel on Wednesday, January 29th, 2020.
This morning, Wednesday, January 29th, 2020, Pierce managed to reach a deal with the Crown Attorney which resulted in the Crown consenting to the release of Patel on the following conditions:
- Do not contact his alleged victim.
- Do not attend within 100 metres of anywhere the alleged victim lives, works, goes to school or otherwise frequents.
- Not to possess any weapons as defined by the criminal code.
- Surrender any weapons that he may have, such as any replica or airsoft guns. (Sources indicate Patel likely owns an airsoft gun).
- He reside at his residence in the 500 block of Oliver road.
Patel is released from the prisoner’s box of the courtroom. Thunder Bay Police Service Special Constables remove his handcuffs and he enters the seating gallery of the courtroom where two, possibly family members, are waiting for him. He is reminded not to contact the woman or to go near anywhere she frequents. He acknowledges the reminder.
