Richard William Nestor Belbas was just arrested at 9:56am this morning, Thursday March 22, 2018 at the Thunder Bay Courthouse upon being recognized by Thunder Bay Police. He was placed in handcuffs and taken downstairs.
He appeared handcuffed before Judge Elaine Burton 20 minutes later. His arrest warrant has been executed by Thunder Bay Police Services. His lawyer Christopher Watkins is present to speak to Judge Burton and explain the absence from court.
All charges (21 in total) against Belbas are now being grouped together and will be going to Superior Court for a future undetermined date. The father of Richard Belbas is in the courtroom to support his son.
The court hears that Belbas has acquired full time employment somewhere (it’s not mentioned where). The number of victims who’ve been defrauded by Belbas is too high for this reporter to count.
Her Honour Justice Burton agrees to release Belbas on his previous conditions. Belbas is taken back downstairs by Thunder Bay Police to retrieve his gold chain. He’s released from custody at 10:25am.
Outside the courthouse, The father of Belbas confronts me to complain that publicity about his son is torturous. This reporter has no sympathy for Belbas. My sympathy lays with all the victims of Richard Belbas. There are numerous victims.
GOOD JOB BY THUNDER BAY POLICE SERVICES
